Mexico City, Mexico, 3 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer R (Gothic) at bottom between pillars, no waves, three-dots denomination, crown outside beaded circle, rare, NGC VF details / 1554 Fleet (designated on label), ex-Potomac Collection (stated on label). Nesmith-5c; Cal-112; S-M1; KM-13.1. 8.20 grams. Shield side with Gothic oMo-oMo, lions with crowns, legend with crude A's, N (retrograde), and O's; pillars side with Gothic R, rounded panel with PLVSVLT inside, three dots for denomination, legend with crude A's, D's (made from I and O), and N's (both retrograde and normal). Struck only from April of 1536 to early 1538 at the latest (and only under assayer R), the 3 reales was deemed too close in size and value to the 2 reales, but ironically most specimens are broader in diameter than the 4 reales that replaced them. Some light surface corrosion (hence the low weight), but with pretty bluish toning around the almost-full legends. NGC #4769835-001. From the Potomac Collection, also from the Spanish 1554 Fleet.
