Bogota, Colombia, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, assayer not visible, denomination VIII to left, mintmark NR to right (1627-51), quadrants of cross transposed, no inner border on cross side, very rare, PCGS XF detail / tooled. Restrepo-M44; KM-3.3; Cal-Type 337. 26.80 grams. This mysterious coin shares aspects of several others of the same Restrepo type (M44), without matching any completely. The cross side lacks an inner border of dots, matching Restrepo-M44.9 (1627), but the shield side has an inner border (unlike M44.9), with the denomination (vertically with V facing outward) and mintmark dot-N-dot-R-dot fairly clear flanking the full but doubled shield with pomegranate at bottom and lions and castles transposed at upper-left (also full crown). A previous offering of this coin in Aureo & Calico attributes it to 1628, but we see nothing specific confirming that attribution. Choice full cross-lions-castles, nicely toned all over, the stated "tooling" nothing more than a sharp scrape on a flat area near edge on cross side. PCGS #39179292.
