BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales Royal (galano), 1649 Z, with crowned-L countermark on cross, extremely rare, NGC AU details / environmental damage, finest and only example in NGC census, Mastalir Plate. S-P34; KM-R19b; Cal-unl (Type 321). Very broad flan with 100% full crown and legends including PHELIPVS and 1649 date, plus choice full inner details, the shield side slightly doubled and the cross side slightly off-center with most of countermark visible in bottom-right quadrant, possibly unique (not listed in Lázaro), deeply toned, with slight traces of porosity near edge. Plate Coin on page 33 of Part A (The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage) and on page 111 of Part B (The Countermarks of 1652) of Robert Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652 (2021).
