BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1648 Z/R, with crown-alone countermark (extremely rare variety) on cross, very rare, Mastalir Plate. S-P34; KM-unl (19a for type); Cal-unl (Type 327). 24.42 grams. Fascinating coin with good full shield flanked by full denomination •oo• to right and assayer Z/R to left (not Z/TR as proposed by Ponterio and Mastalir, as TR ended in 1647, by our records), off-center cross with 100% full countermark (Mastalir's K1c, just five known), bottom half of 8 visible in doubled legend, unevenly struck AVF with a few dark spots, edge-crack. Plate Coin on page 242 of Part B (The Countermarks of 1652) of Robert Mastalir's book The Great Transition at the Potosí Mint 1649-1652: The 1649-1652 Crowned Shield Coinage and the Countermarks of 1652 (2021), also pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of July 1994 (lot 799).
