VENEZUELA, Caracas, 4 reales-sized proclamation medal, Ferdinand VII, 1812, General Monteverde, very rare, NGC XF details / cleaned, ex-Medina. Fonrobert-7973; Herrera-8; Medina-268. 11.79 grams. Obverse with military bust inside legend FERN.o VII . REI D. / LAS ESPANAS.; reverse with lion holding shield inside legend D. MONTEU.e LE PROC.o CAR.s CEP. 24D. 1812 DOM.o with ornate rim; plain edge. This is one of the most important issues of Venezuela, as it marks the brief restoration of Spanish rule there after the fall of the First Republic in 1812 to Captain General Domingo de Monteverde, whose name appears in the reverse legend. Light rainbow-gray toning over muted luster and faint hairlines, characteristic die crack and rim cud on obverse, plus a typically weak center on reverse, reportedly one of fewer than fifteen examples known, this one with excellent pedigree. Pedigreed to the José T. Medina Collection (stated on label).
