VENEZUELA, Barinas (Caujaral), "imitation cob" 1 real , "1814" date (1817-19), inverted 4, very rare, NGC AU 58, finest and only example in NGC census. Cal-534 var; KM-2 var. 1.38 grams. Typically thin, octagonal flan, with full cross-castles-lions and pillars-and-waves with bold date 1814 showing a retrograde 4 (an unlisted variety), very choice grade for this type, lightly toned and lustrous, a rare and important piece for the Venezuelan specialist. Between 1817 and 1819, General José Antonio Páez took control of the Venezuelan plains (los Llanos) and ordered the minting of provisional silver coins—starting with 2 reales and later 1-real coins like this one—to pay his troops by using melted-down silver jewelry and other ornaments like stirrups and sword scabbards.
