VENEZUELA, 2 pesos, 27-8-1811, serial F. 31 67301, block T. 68, PMG VF 25. Pick-5; Rosenman-2. Signatures of Bartolomé Blandin, Juan Germán Roscio, and Martín Tovar Ponte. A desirable example of the 2 pesos from the second issue of Venezuela’s paper money decreed in 1811, among the first notes used in Venezuela, with a radiant sun seal with 1811 ESTADOS UNIDOS DE VENEZUELA and another seal featuring an anchor and tree between sailing ships bears the warning PENA DE MUERTE AL FALSIFICADOR "Death Penalty to Counterfeit." Extremely rare in any condition and not priced at any level in the Pick catalog. This example is an eye-appealing survivor, having been apparently mounted in an album at one time, thus preserving it from damage. The printing, while somewhat crude, is bold and fully legible. Light mounting marks and a few small stains on the reverse are noted. A rare opportunity to acquire a nice example of the earliest notes in Venezuela paper currency.
