VARIOUS COUNTRIES, mints uncertain, clump of three heavily encrusted silver coins (two Dutch 2½ gulden or Mexican cap-and-rays 8 reales plus one smaller coin, all of the mid-1800s), rare provenance. 89 grams total. Roughly 3" x 2" x ¾". Thickly encrusted piece with bits of shells and verdigris over two distinct dollar-sized coins plus a smaller coin (possibly a 4 reales or small Dutch denomination). Recovered by Bill Mathers in 1979, with copy of explanation letter and hand-written map showing the location of the wreck on an eponymous reef in the South China Sea (near Singapore) that is famous also for being the location of the 1752 wreck Geldermalsen ("Nanking Cargo"). The ship was named after a Dutch Naval hero in the Anglo-Dutch wars of the mid-1600s. Recovered from: Admiral Stellingwerf, sunk in 1856 off Bintan Island, Indonesia
