VARIOUS COUNTRIES, framed set of Italian 1000 lire, USA series 1935E $1 silver certificate, and an American Express $20 travelers' cheque, all recovered from the Andrea Doria shipwreck. After Gimbel's recovery of the Andrea Doria safe in 1981, its contents of Italian lire and U.S. silver certificates were professionally conserved and made available for sale. However, a select group of notes were assembled into unique framed sets and were given to universities and museums for display. Over the years, a few of these rare sets have entered the market. The set consists of an Italian 1000 lire note dated 14-8-1947, serial Q17 027286 (Pick-88a); a U.S. $1 silver certificate, series 1935E, serial X20808601G (Fr-1613N; KL-1456); and an American Express $20 travelers cheque. All of the notes exhibit some degree of edge damage and staining yet are mostly intact. Interestingly, the $1 silver certificate has a penciled teller's note "42" on the face. Accompanying the notes in the frame are an image of the Andrea Doria at sea at top and a small placard on the wreck and its salvage by Peter Gimbel and Elga Andersen. Additional shipping costs will apply to this item; please contact us in advance for a shipping quote. With The Doria Project certificate mounted on the back of the frame. Recovered from: Andrea Doria, sunk in 1956 off Nantucket, Massachusetts
