Utrecht, Netherlands (United Provinces), large silver medal, 1624, Dutch victories over the Spanish off Peru and Brazil, by Jan van Bylaer, rare, ex-Medina (Plate). Betts-22; Medina-354; Van Loon II, 55. 81.41 grams; 68mm. Obverse with bust of Maurice, Prince of Orange, inside script legend "Mauritius D.G. Princeps Auriacae, Com: Nafs: &c. Prov: confae: Gub:" within border containing the seven shields of the United Provinces; reverse with crowned coat of arms of Prince Maurice within wreath above ribbon with "Le Maintiendray." above "16 Cum Privil 2"; plain edge. A fantastic work of medallic art struck to commemorate the Dutch naval victory against Spanish warships at Lima, Peru, and the Dutch sacking of Salvador, Brazil, in 1624. Rare as an original strike and certainly among the finest and heaviest recorded examples of this rarity, with an important pedigree to the Medina Collection. Mint State with just a bit of cabinet friction on high points, lustrous fields with golden toning darkening at rims.
Pedigreed to the Jose Toribio Medina collection, plated on pages 232-233 of his book Medallas Europeas Relativas a America (1924).
