USA, large bronze medal, dated 1779 (Paris Mint restrike ca. 1880-1901, Comitia Americana series), Captain John Paul Jones / capture of HMS Serapis by USS Bonhomme Richard, by A. Dupre, PCGS SP62. Julian-NA-1. 55mm. Popular medal struck in the late 1800s at the Paris Mint using the original dies from its first striking. Obverse: bust of John Paul Jones facing right, JOANNI PAVLO JONES CLASSIS PRAEFECTO above, COMITIA AMERICANA below, DUPRE. F. on truncation. Reverse: Jones' flagship USS Bonhomme Richard locked in battle with HMS Serapis, HOSTIVM NAVIEVS / CAPTIS AVT FVGATIS above, AD ORAM SCOTIAE XXIII. SEPT. / M.DCCLXXVIIII. / DUPRE. F. in exergue. Edge: cornucopia and BRONZE. Dark brass color with contrasting toning around the high-relief details, faint hairlines only, struck from sandblasted original dies.
