USA, bronze military decoration, 1898, Victory of Manila Bay Dewey bronze medal (Spanish-American War), awarded to Chief Machinist James F Fair of the cruiser USS Baltimore. 76.74 grams; 46mm. Obverse: bust of Commodore Dewey facing right surrounded by THE GIFT OF THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES TO THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE ASIATIC SQUADRON UNDER THE COMMAND OF COMMODORE GEORGE DEWEY. Reverse: shirtless serviceman sitting on turret holding a flagpole, IN MEMORY OF THE VICTORY OF MANILA BAY MAY I 1898 encircling, USS BALTIMORE at bottom. Edge: smooth, engraved with CHIEF MACHINIST JAMES F FAIR. Suspended from a hanger with eagle between olive branch and sword hilt. Designed by Daniel Chester French and produced by Tiffany. James F. Fair is confirmed as being on the roster as the Chief Machinist of the USS Baltimore during the Battle of Manila Bay; the ship participated in bombarding the Sangley Point battery and sinking the Spanish cruiser Don Antonio de Ulloa. Excellent preservation with ample luster.
