USA, bronze military decoration, 1898, U.S Naval Campaign West Indies (Spanish-American War), awarded to Boatswain's Mate First Class Jefferson Borden, with suspension ring. 30.30 grams; 38mm (medal only). Phase II Sampson medal. Obverse: bust of Rear Admiral William E. Sampson. Reverse: naval soldiers in action, MARIEL / JULY 5 in exergue. Edge: hand-engraved (typical for this type) with JEFFERSON BORDEN B.M.1.C. Rare Mariel medal issued to Boatswain's Mate First Class Jefferson Borden during the action on July 5, 1898 off Mariel, Cuba. On that date, three US ships, the USS Prairie, the USS Hawk, and the USS Castine, engaged and destroyed a Cuban blockade runner while under fire. It is unknown on which ship Borden served. Nice condition with only minor edge knocks, suspension attached but no ribbon.
