USA, bronze military decoration, 1898, U.S Naval Campaign West Indies (Spanish-American War), awarded to Paymaster James Andrew Ring of the battleship USS Iowa, with bars U.S.S. Iowa, San Juan P.R. (May 12), Santiago (May 31) (June 6) (June 16) (July 2) (July 4), with original red-and-blue ribbon and box of issue. 74.89 grams (medal and ribbon); 38mm (medal only); box 3-1/2" x 2-1/4" x 3/4". Phase III Sampson medal (bust of Rear Admiral William E. Sampson on obverse, naval soldiers on reverse, SANTIAGO DE CUBA / JULY 3 in exergue), the edge engraved with PAY'M'R JAMES ANDREW RING. James Andrew Ring is confirmed as being on the roster as the Paymaster of the USS Iowa during her service off Puerto Rico and Cuba; the battleship USS Iowa fought in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba and was later the quarters for Spanish admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete. Interestingly enough, when Admiral Cervera was in need of extra clothes, it was Paymaster Ring who gave up some of his, as he was the same size as the Spanish admiral. Exceptional example of this popular decoration awarded to an officer of importance during the war and rarely seen with its original box of issue.
