USA, brass medal, 1975, University of South Carolina Institute of Archeology and Anthropology, with reverse showing a typical Vernon Porto Bello medal design (1739), commemorating the finding of a Vernon medal during excavation at Fort Dorchester, SC, ex-Adams. 21.62 grams; 37 mm. Aged-brass UNC with a couple rim-nicks, a modern medal made for USC-IAA's SHA-ICUA meeting on January 8-11, 1975, with its entire reverse copying a Vernon medal design in commemoration of the fact that a Porto Bello Admiral Vernon medal was found in 1972 during archeological excavation at Fort Dorchester, a tabby fort built in 1757 outside of Charleston, SC. XRF: 78.17% copper, 20.81% zinc. Pedigreed to the John Adams Collection (with his handwritten tag), acquired as a gift from John Kraljevich in 2011.
