USA (San Francisco mint), gold $20 coronet Liberty double eagle, 1856-S, coin #262, NGC UNC details / saltwater damage, ex-St. Lucie County Bank, rare provenance. 33.35 grams. According to documents from the State of Florida, this coin was #262 in a group sold to the St. Lucie County Bank to cover salvage expenses, then subsequently purchased and resold by the Indian River Coin Company, accompanied by a rare and all-important letter (only the second we have offered with a Fort Capron coin). Bold details with faint sea salvage surfaces still showing plenty of luster and spots of rich orange-gold toning. NGC #5936517-001. With original 1972 letter from Indian River Coin Co. attesting to its origin ("Gordy-Ashley Find") and original tag #262.From: "Fort Capron treasure," lost off Fort Pierce (east coast of Florida) in 1857
