USA (San Francisco Mint), gold $20 coronet Liberty "double eagle," 1884-S, PCGS AU details / environmental damage / Saddle Ridge Hoard. The Saddle Ridge Hoard was discovered in February of 2013 by a couple walking their property in Northern California. The find consisted of US gold coins, mostly $20 double eagles, buried in eight metal canisters. To this day, very little is known about why this hoard came to be buried; speculation has ranged from a life savings stored away for security to a Wild West robbery. This example from the hoard bears interesting rust staining from its time underground in the metal cans. Still, a substantial amount of the coin shows the lustrous, high AU details one would expect from the hoard. From the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" (stated on label), housed in a special promotional wooden box (hinge broken) with booklet, flyer and small certificate, also photographed in a 2014 Coin World article about the hoard.
