USA (San Francisco Mint), 25 cents Seated Liberty, 1856-S/S, large S over small S, PCGS VF 25, with pinch of gold. Briggs-4-E; FS-501. Only six examples of this rare die variety were recovered from the SS Central America during the 2014 expedition (of an overall 35-50 surviving pieces with this variety estimated by Briggs, shipwreck or not). This die error occurred when a Mint employee accidentally used an S mintmark punch made for a dime, then "corrected" the error by repunching with the quarter-sized mintmark. This example evidently saw some circulation prior to sinking, although many details, particularly across the eagle, are quite sharp. The surfaces, untouched by saltwater corrosion, are quite silvery, with only a hint of brown toning across Liberty. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans, also with promotional cardboard box. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 in deep water off North Carolina Please use this link to verify the certification number
