USA (Philadelphia Mint), gold $10 Liberty Head eagle, 1861, NGC MS 61, with wooden display box. A Mint State grade rarity from the SS Republic where many of the gold $10 pieces graded in the AU range. In the NGC census, 57 1861 $10 eagles from the SS Republic have been graded (of the 60 examples recovered from the wreck) with just 17 in MS 61 and only three finer in 62. This piece bears the usual bagmarks to be expected from handling but otherwise the surfaces are as lustrous and golden as the day it was struck. With elegant wooden display box plus a documentary DVD on the SS Republic salvage operation. Recovered from: S.S. Republic, sunk in 1865 off Georgia
