US soldiers in the Spanish-American War: Puerto Rico (under Spain), 1 peso, (1895)PG-V, obverse smoothed and engraved FROM / W L S / 18 - TO - 98 / H J S / PORTO RICO / JULY 28 OCT 11, ex-Archilla. KM-24. 22.36 grams. Mostly likely crafted by an American serviceman commemorating his service during the land invasion of Puerto Rico; US troops began landing on July 25 at Guanica with more troops following. Given the date, it's probable that this soldier landed at Ponce a few days later. By August 13, an armistice between the US and Spain ended hostilities on the island with Spanish troops leaving by Oct. 18, the same day the US flag was formally raised at San Juan. Intricately crafted piece with ornate lettering and decorations, holed at top for safekeeping. Engravings on Puerto Rican pesos are very rare. Pedigreed to the Efrain Archilla Diez collection.
