UNITED STATES, silver-plated copper medal, 1898, PRO PATRIA / Spanish-American War, by the French Trading Co. N.Y., ex-Roehrs. 33.51 grams. 46 mm. Obverse with a soldier and sailor standing around a cannon as a winged figure blows its horn above, MANILLA / PORTO-RICO / SANTIAGO 14TH JULY / 1898 on scroll at right, TO THE GLORY OF THE U.S.A. above, and A. DUSEAUX PARIS at bottom; Reverse with a seated woman at center holding an American flag and palm branch, her breastplate reading USA on it, marching troops in the background to the left and a sailing ship at right, a cannon at lower left and an eagle above ESPAÑA to the lower right, PRO PATRIA above, FRENCH TRADING CO. N.Y. below; Edge: smooth with loop at top. A rare and interesting medal commemorating America's victory in the Spanish-American War struck by a French company that also operated a store in New York City, intending to capitalize on patriotic zeal in a city which hosted many military parades and events following the war. Very few examples of this medal have turned up in the market since. A lustrous example with sharp details, the high points rather golden from light wear. Pedigreed to the Roehrs Collection.
