UNITED STATES, mints uncertain, clump of six seated Liberty half dollars, dates not visible (one 1861-O Confederate-struck with Speared Olive Bud variety), very rare. 75.32 grams total. Uncleaned clumps from the SS Republic are already rare but this particular clump offers up something special: One of the end coins on this leaning stack shows a distinctive speared olive bud reverse which is only seen on the 1861-O halves struck by the Confederate States! While dark and encrusted, that coin's sharp design details show through just enough to identify it as a Confederate-struck half minted in March or April of 1861. We've offered a few clumps from the SS Republic over the years but this is a first to have one that has a clear Confederate half included. The other coins in the stack are tightly stuck together with the other end-coin also showing its reverse though it bears a bit more encrustation and rust spots. Excellent opportunity for the serious SS Republic collector. With certificate. Recovered from: S.S. Republic, sunk in 1865 off Georgia
