UNITED STATES, lot of eight uniface specimen notes from a "fractional currency shield" (1866-67). A group of specimen notes removed from a fractional currency shield, each exhibiting some mounting remnants and staining but with bold designs on all. The fractional currency shield was produced by the U.S. Treasury in 1866-67 and sold to banks to help employees weed out counterfeits by having a quick reference of genuine designs. Each specimen note was printed from original plates but on one side only.
