UNITED STATES, group of four Spanish-American War pins, circa 1898, Admiral George Dewey, ex-Rudman. 35.17 grams total. Large photographic glass disk with portrait of Dewey; Large pin with portrait of Dewey and "The two most popular people on Earth / Find the other one" above, mirror on the back side, by Whitehead & Hoag; Small pin with portrait of Dewey and "Admiral Geo. Dewey" below, "Compliments of The Prudential Insurance Company / Newark, N.J." above and their advertisement set into the back, by Whithead & Hoag; silver gilt pin with bust of Dewey in front of crossed enameled American and Navy Admiral flags. During the Spanish-American War, Admiral George Dewey led the attack on Manila Bay that defeated the Spanish Pacific Fleet with the loss of only one American sailor. Dewey's ensuing popularity in American society led to an attempted presidential run in 1900 and his promotion to Admiral of the Navy in 1903. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman Collection.
