UNITED STATES, bronze Sampson medal, 1898, U.S Naval Campaign West Indies (Spanish-American War), awarded to Gunner's Mate Benjamin Gaynor of the cruiser USS Brooklyn. 35.95 grams total. Benjamin Gaynor is confirmed on the crew roster as serving aboard the USS Brooklyn. The USS Brooklyn was the flagship of the Flying Squadron led by Commodore Winfield Schley and played an important role in the Battle of Santiago. During the battle, the USS Brooklyn blasted the Spanish cruiser Vizcaya until its beaching and chased the Spanish cruiser Cristóbal Colón until it too was beached and scuttled. The battle ended with the decisive defeat of the Spanish squadron and surrender of Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete. Nicely toned obverse with light rub on the high points from wear, dark toned reverse, original ribbon with sewn reinforcement at bar hanger brooch inscribed with USS Brooklyn.
