UNITED STATES, San Francisco mint, gold Coronet Liberty Head double eagle ($20), 1881-S, PCGS AU50 (Saddle Ridge Hoard label). KM-74.3. The Saddle Ridge Hoard was discovered in February of 2013 by a couple walking their property in Northern California. The find consisted of U.S. gold coins, mostly $20 double eagles, buried in eight metal canisters. To this day, very little is known about why this hoard came to be buried; speculation has ranged from a life savings stored away for security to a Wild West robbery. Lustrous piece with some surface friction from circulation, a few small spots of encrustation on the obverse, rich golden toning around the rims and across the fields. From the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" (stated on label), housed in a special promotional wooden box with booklet.
