UNITED STATES, San Francisco mint, gold Coronet Liberty Head double eagle ($20), 1865-S, NGC MS 62 / Brother Jonathan. KM-74.1. The S.S. Brother Jonathan sank on July 30, 1865, after striking a rock during its return to the harbor of Crescent City, California. Just nineteen people survived aboard a single lifeboat. Of the 225 lives lost, some notable passengers included: Anson G. Henry, a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln's and the newly appointed Superintendent of the proposed Dalles (Oregon) branch mint; James Nisbet, a publisher who wrote his will as the ship sank; and Roseanna Keenan, a madam traveling with seven prostitutes. Beautiful piece with satiny luster across the obverse and only minor bagmarks to note, rich golden-toned reverse, well struck with sharp details. Recovered from: Brother Jonathan, sunk in 1865 off Crescent City, California
