UNITED STATES, San Francisco Mint, gold $20 coronet Liberty "double eagle," 1883-S, PCGS AU53 (Saddle Ridge Hoard Label). The Saddle Ridge Hoard was discovered in February of 2013 by a couple walking their property in Northern California. The find consisted of U.S. gold coins, mostly $20 double eagles, buried in eight metal canisters. To this day, very little is known about why this hoard came to be buried; speculation has ranged from a life savings stored away for security to a Wild West robbery. Bright example from this hoard with minor surface friction for the grade, nicely detailed Liberty and particularly sharp eagle. From the "Saddle Ridge Hoard" (stated on label), housed in a special promotional wooden box with booklet.
