UNITED STATES, Philadelphia mint, gold $20 Coronet Liberty double eagle, 1851, PCGS AU58 (in large SS Central America "Ship of Gold" holder with pinch of gold dust). A pleasing example of this earlier and rare date from the wreck with only a handful of pieces known in any grade. In the PCGS population report, this piece is tied with three others for second finest known in the census, topped only by a single MS60. With only minor surface friction and substantial mint luster, this coin is choice for the assigned grade. Many recessed areas, particularly across the reverse, have toned nicely with rich golden-honey hues. Housed in a special PCGS slab with a pinch of gold (about 1.5 grams) from the shipwreck, the label hand-signed by chief scientist Bob Evans. Recovered from: S.S. Central America, sunk in 1857 off North Carolina
