UNITED STATES, Philadelphia mint, copper Fugio cent, 1787, four cinquefoils, pointed rays, STATES UNITED, NGC MS 66 BN, "top pop." This incredible example of early American coinage designed by Benjamin Franklin himself is an American numismatic treasure. Not only is this coin among just five others tied for finest known for the variety in the NGC census, but it is also tied for finest known across the entire series of official Fugio cents graded by NGC! Likewise, at PCGS the Fugio cent series also tops out at MS66. The obverse depicts a radiant sunface over a sundial with FUGIO and 1787 flanking and the motto MIND YOUR BUSINESS below; the reverse depicts a great chain of 13 links representing the 13 colonies around a ring with UNITED STATES and WE ARE ONE at center. The glossy chocolate brown-toned surfaces bear only the evidence of some die-clashing and a few miniscule carbon spots. The central details are particularly sharply struck as is noticeable across the sundial; a bit of strike weakness in the outer details such as the rings or the lower motto MIND YOUR BUSINESS as is typical for the type is present yet doesn't detract from the overall eye appeal of this top-grade survivor.
