Small gilt picture frame from the Royal Charter (1859). 4" x 3"; 14.45 grams. Corroded oval frame with gilding mostly intact and bright but underlying metal completely gone, some damage including bends and small holes. The steamer Royal Charter, built in 1855, sank near Anglesey, Wales, during a storm on October 2, 1859 while finishing a voyage from Melbourne, Australia, to Liverpool, England. Many passengers were gold miners traveling with their cargo of gold coins and Australian gold nuggets. Of the nearly 470 passengers and crew, only 39 survived.
