Silver Columbus statue. 226 grams, 4" tall. This woman-like figurine with flowing cape was actually the top of a religious vessel known as a monstrance, several specimens of which have been found from various Spanish shipwrecks, although it is unknown exactly why Columbus was chosen for the figure on top. This specimen is totally encrusted (with an oyster shell on the legs) but retains its distinctive form, with the exception of its arms, which are missing below the elbows, important pedigree. From the Spanish 1733 Fleet, Florida Keys. From the Art McKee museum, with original photos (front and back), and pictured on page 51 of History under the Sea (1973) by Mendel Peterson.
