Silver 1-oz token made from Atocha silver by Gary Sleezer ca. 1985. 31.15 grams. Reportedly made from traces of silver in the oxide crust removed from the bars, hand-struck octagonal tokens like this one showing a caricature of Mel Fisher on obverse and a cross-lions-castles on reverse were sold by the maker (artist Gary Sleezer) outside of Mel Fisher's store in the late 1980s under an express agreement with Mel. An interesting piece harkening back to the heyday of the Atocha salvage with crude yet folksy design commemorating Mel and the discovery of the Atocha with "Today's the Day" in the legend. The first example we have offered and the only one to have appeared on the market recently, possibly rare.
