Seville, Spain, 1 escudo, Charles-Joanna, assayer * to right, mintmark S to left, ex-Aleppo Merchant (1658), very rare provenance, mounted in 18K gold bezel. 4.50 grams total. Typically finely detailed coin (AU or so) with all elements full and with reddish toning, contour mounted in a very thin but deep bezel with tiny loop and jump-ring at top, the main attraction being its provenance to a wreck we have never offered before, in fact the only item we have ever heard of from this shipwreck, a Levant Company vessel homebound to London from Smyrna (Greece) when it sank near the mouth of the River Camel (Padstow, Cornwall). From the Aleppo Merchant (1658), with original certificate hand-signed by the salvager, noted author Richard Larn.
