Seville, Spain, 1/2 real, Ferdinand-Isabel, mintmark S below cross-of-five-dots flanking crowned F on reverse, Latin legends, very rare, NGC XF 45. Lopez de la Fuente-unl (E8.1 for type); Cal-unl (Type 55). 1.60 grams. Very broad flan extending past the outer borders (one tiny edge-crack), nicely toned fields contrasting with bold details, near top grade, desirable type known to have been struck exclusively for importation to and use in the New World (specifically Santo Domingo, according to some). This exact variety (unlisted in references) has appeared a few times in the past dozen years, but never in straight grade.
