Santa Cruz de Mompox, United Provinces of Nueva Granada (Colombia), 1 real, 1813, Pinerez issue. SCWPM-unlisted; CHPM-23.1. The very beginnings of Colombian paper money include this limited issue that circulated in Santa Cruz de Mompox in 1813. Though most citizens preferred gold and silver coins in transactions, the signatures of the city's public officials (Vicente Celedonio Gutierrez de Pinerez, Don Ramon Miguel de Enjo, and Rafael Gomez) gave people some degree of confidence in the note. In an article entitled "Los Primeros Billetes de un Estado Independiente en Nueva Granada" published this year, Andres Cortazar notes that despite not having legal backing to issue such notes, these one real notes were successfully introduced by the Mompox officials. VF with some pieces missing along the edges and a few small holes in the center, though the sparse design remains fully visible and very bold, tape residue along the left side, ink spot in center. Very rare and desirable in any condition.
