San Juan, Puerto Rico, Banco de Puerto Rico, 5 dollars, 1-7-1909, series F, certified PCGS Fine 12 - Hole Punch Cancelled, Stamp Cancelled, ex-Newman. SCWPM-47b. Serial 028310. American currency expert and collector Eric P. Newman collected not just American banknotes but also Puerto Rican notes due to the island's close connection to the United States. This example from his collection illustrates that connection with the bilingual Spanish-English text and the design executed by the American Bank Note Company. The obverse features a bust of Christopher Columbus to the left and a red seal featuring the Paschal Lamb "the Lamb of God," while the reverse features a woman reclining and the bank charter dates of 1888 (chartered in Madrid, Spain) and 1900 (chartered in Washington, D.C. after the U.S. invasion which led to Spain ceding Puerto Rico in 1898). A nice example with some star punch and stamp cancellations (as noted by PCGS). PCGS #80593867. Pedigreed to the Eric P. Newman Collection.
