Salt Lake City, Utah, Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd Rail Road Company, $10 remainder, Jan. 15, 1874, serial 125, payable at the Salt Lake City National Bank of Utah, very rare, PMG VG 10 net. Rust-unl. In 1848, two Mormon settlers, Sanford and Thomas Bingham, discovered rich copper ore in the area now known as Bingham Canyon. However, Brigham Young suggested the two avoid starting a mine there and focus on the Mormon settlements instead. It wasn't until 1863 that mining in Bingham Canyon began in earnest. In 1872, the Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd Railroad was incorporated; by the following year, the railroad offered daily service from Sandy Station to the many mining operations in the canyon. In early 1874, the railroad began issuing its own "bank notes" which were payable up to 31 days after issuance at the Salt Lake City National Bank of Utah. While lower denominations are occasionally encountered, this $10 note is extremely rare and is possibly the only surviving example of this denomination. The type was unknown to Rust when he published extensive Mormon and Utah Coin and Currency reference book in 1984. Even the massive Eric P. Newman Collection only held a single $10 lithographic proof with green underprint. This remainder is well handled with a repaired tear, edge splits, and minor rust damage noted by PMG. The vignettes, a native American to left and Athena to right, are still readily visible and the red underprint is very bold. This is a key opportunity for any Mormon, Utah, or railroad currency collectors, not to be missed. Pedigreed to the 2007 Heritage Long Beach Currency Auction 448, lot 12271.
