SWITZERLAND, Bern, 5 francs "shooting taler," 1881, Fribourg shooting festival, ex-Peterson. KM-S15. 25.01 grams. Among the most unusual coins that we've encountered from a shipwreck is this Swiss shooting taler recovered from the wreck of a coaling schooner driven onto rocks at Point Reyes in rolling seas and heavy fog, dived on by the famous adventurer and Smithsonian curator Mendel Peterson sometime in the 1950s-70s. XF with very light surface corrosion and black encrustation around the details. Pedigreed to the collection of the late Dr. Mendel Peterson (Curator of Underwater Archeology for the Smithsonian Institution), with original Brandenberg tag and information sheets. Recovered from: Annie E. Smale, sunk in 1910 off San Francisco, California
