SPAIN, Valladolid, cob 8 reales, Philip II, 1590 oF/oA, very rare, PCGS VF35, finest and only example in PCGS census. Cal-766. 27.05 grams. Very broad and nearly round flan with full but slightly doubled shield and crown, complete cross-and-tressure with well-defined castles and lions, nearly full legends including bold date in small digits with 1 and 5 inverted, all nicely contrasting with deeply toned recesses. An interesting aspect of this issue is that the last two digits of the date are repeated to the left of the shield, above the wavy-lines mintmark, although that part is rather indistinct on the present example (due to the doubling), although the assayer oF/oA above denomination 8 on the right side is bold. Overall this is a choice example of the distinctively rare first dated Valladolid issue. Archival research published by Diego Álvarez Gómez and Ramón Sampietro García has identified assayer oF as Francisco Flores, via the record of his examination and license dated May 9, 1590, the same year as this coin, correcting the previous attribution to Fernando Flores by the Josep Pellicer i Bru. As this issue is only known with oF punched over oA, we must mention that an MS 62 at NGC labeled without the over-assayer is technically finer, but it is the only one.
