SPAIN, Toledo, gold 1 escudo, Ferdinand-Isabel, assayer *M to left, mintmark oT to right, extremely rare, PCGS MS62, finest and only example in PCGS census, Tauler Plate. Cal-2; Fr-unl. Good full shield and cross despite flat spot near edge, parts of legend visible including (FERNA)NDVS ET ELISA(BET) on obverse despite the fact that it was struck after Isabel had died in 1504, and significant as the only issue with gold cob design (shield/cross) struck in Ferdinand's name while Joanna was queen of Castile and León, presumably before the Charles-Joanna issues that followed Ferdinand's death in 1516. However, Tauler points out that this issue (of which only two are known, the present example and the Calicó plate coin) is identical to the Charles-Joanna coins, particularly the legend error HIPANIARVM (without S) on reverse. Both Tauler and Calicó list this issue under "Fernando y Juana." (Note: Label says Calicó-60 in error.). Plate Coin number 1 in Tauler's Oro Macuquino (2011).
