SPAIN, Toledo, cob 8 reales, Philip IV, 1651 Y, rare. Cal-1679; KM-101. 27.05 grams. Very bold full date at 1-3 o'clock outside the full cross, full shield (off-center) with bold full denomination VIII to right inside an equally bold PHILIPVS, some doubling, VF with contrasting natural toning.
Along with Madrid (see previous two lots), the Toledo mint ramped up production in the early 1650s to handle melted Potosí silver and increase output in order to offset reduced shipments from Peru. These rare coins are now recognized as historically important to collectors in the Americas.
