SPAIN, Toledo, 8 reales, Ferdinand-Isabel, assayer *M on reverse, mintmark oT to right on obverse, very rare. López de la Fuente-16.1.3; Cal-583; Cay-2850. 25.54 grams. Full interior details and much legend despite light surface corrosion, attractively toned, not just rare as from a shipwreck but quite rare as a coin type, desirable as among the first "crowns" (8 reales) of Spain but also a rare mint, with catalog value of 15,000 Euros in Calicó. It is interesting to note that this coin has the same assayer and mintmark as lot 1 in this auction, a 1 escudo with Charles-Joanna design but with legend of Ferdinand-Isabel, indicating that both coins were probably struck well into the 1500s (but probably not as late as the 1560s, under Philip II, as indicated by Pellicer i Bru), this particular die-variety with reverse legend ending in ARAG not listed in López de la Fuente. Pedigreed to the Steve Valentine Collection, with original certificate from the salvor/conservator. Recovered from: Santiago, sunk in 1585 off Bassas da India in the Indian Ocean
