SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip III, assayer B, PCGS UNC details / scratch (Atocha Shipwreck), ex-Morse. Cal-Type 197; Fr-189. 6.69 grams. Good full crown above off-center shield with bold mintmark S above just the top-right part of assayer B (not listed on certificate), nearly full cross with light peripheral scratches, traces of white coral in crevices, rich gold color and luster all over. Unlike the hundreds of thousands of silver cobs found on the Atocha and Santa Margarita, only a handful of gold cobs were recovered from these wrecks, making them very rare and important trophies for shipwreck collectors. Because Spanish gold cobs are readily available from non-wreck sources, it is critical for Atocha examples to have original Fisher certification, which is the case here, bolstered by high-grade certification from PCGS as well. With original Fisher tags and certificate 85A-GC33, pedigreed to the J.M. Morse III Collection. Recovered from: Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida
