SPAIN, Madrid, gold cob 8 escudos, Philip IV, assayer not visible (early to mid-1640s), denomination Arabic 8, no Naples-Sicily in shield, very rare, NGC MS 63. Gutiérrez-F4.M.1643; KM-136.1; Cal-Type 398; Fr-199. 27.00 grams. Clear partial date 164(_) straddling an edge split (of which there are three others) outside of bold full cross, traces of mintmark (MD monogram reading vertically) and assayer (possibly oA over V over IB, attributable to 1646/3) to left of sharp full shield with denomination 8 to right (an aspect of 1643-46 only) and lacking Naples-Sicily at top right (a characteristic of the date 1643, per Gutiérrez F4.M.1643, date not specified on NGC label), rich gold color and lovely MS surfaces all over.
