SANTO DOMINGO, 4 reales, Charles-Joanna, "Early Series," assayer F to left, mintmark backwards-S to left and P to right, PLV between pillars, extremely rare, NGC AU 55, "top pop." Downing/Rudman type 4R.17; S-SD1; Cal-141. 13.53 grams. Lustrous and beautifully toned (mostly deep blue but with some golden highlights), struck on a very large flan with 100% full legends and near-perfect inner details save for slight doubling at top of shield, minor edge-split as made, the pillars side struck slightly off-center, overall exceptional condition, which is extremely rare for this series. Although not unusual for this series, note the misspelling of INDIARVN and the use of a retrograde S in REGIS. This is the only example of its type. While unique as a whole, each side of the coin is known in other combinations. What is unusual is the quality, both in striking and in preservation, as many are salvaged and only one other is graded at this top figure of AU 55 (none in MS).

The reader should pause and consider the rarity of this series, which began just after the Mexican Charles-Joanna "Early Series" (which it resembles) but is far rarer, cruder, and more elusive on the market due to strong private collector demand. Also consider that the 4 reales is the largest collectible denomination for this mint. The present example is not just a coin for a specialist but a trophy for anyone who wants the best and rarest. Pedigreed to the Ponterio auction of June 1997 (lot 1488), Plate Coin on page 37 (coin 27) of Paoletti's 8 Reales Cobs of Potosí (3rd ed, 2016) and on page 81 of Downing/Rudman's The Charles & Joanna Silver Coinage of Santo Domingo, 1542-1552 (2023).
