Roman Republic, AR denarius, Sex. Pompeius Fostlus, 137 BC, Rome mint. Pompeia 1; BMC 926; Syd. 461; Craw. 235/1c. 3.9 grams. Helmeted head of Roma right; capis behind, X (mark of value) below chin / She-wolf standing right, head left, suckling twins (Romulus and Remus); behind, birds on fig tree; on left, shepherd standing right. VF with contrasting toning. "This family was of plebeian origin and it would appear that they claimed descent from Faustulus, the royal shepherd of Amulius, who found the twins suckled by the wolf at the foot of the Palatine, the cradle in which they had been borne down the Tiber having overturned under a fig-tree."
