Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincon), very rare. S-P1; KM-5.1; Cal-667. 26.37 grams. The long and eminently collectible Potosi 8R non-Royal cob series has several rarities, but none so significant as the very first issue under assayer Rincon in 1575, populated by perhaps only around a dozen examples struck from two different obverse dies that differ most notably by the legend and style of lion in Brabant: D,G, and Seville-style lion (Paoletti 47, Sellschopp 13) versus DEI,G, and flat lion (Paoletti 48, Sellschopp 12). The present example of the former die shows a full crown and nearly full legends in addition to the choice full shield and cross-lions-castles, with slightly uneven rusty toning over slightly oxidized surfaces, overall VF or better.
