Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1652E transitional Type IV. S-P37; KM-A20.4; CT-432. 26.59 grams. During the 1652 transition there appears to have been an effort to make some exceptional coins like this one that fall somewhere between Royals (which are round and even) and regular strikes (which are crude and uneven), and on coins like this the strikes are so full and well executed that it seems certain they were still meant to be presentation pieces, an opinion that is reflected in the presence of these coins in Lazaro's book on Royals. The present specimen (very similar to Lazaro #125) bears full and bold legends and crisp and well-defined inner details, without even a trace of corrosion, also lightly toned, just a hint of (typical) doubling. Pedigreed to our Auction #8, with original lot-tag #570, with photo-certificate. Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
