Potosi, Bolivia, cob 8 reales, 1652E transitional Type I, very rare. S-P37; KM-A20.1; CT-unl. 24.37 grams. Impressively well-detailed and uncorroded (the low weight notwithstanding), this is one of the best-known specimens of the elusive first transitional Type, which is distinguished by the lack of a bottom (third) row above the waves. While it is somewhat double-struck, all the central data and even much of the legend are clear and prominent due to elegant toning on the fields. Recovered from: Capitana, sunk in 1654 off Chanduy, Ecuador
